(TS) Some significant themes and characters repeatedly come out more than once again in To Kill A Mockingbird. (SD) First of all, loneliness is a blatant theme, which was echoed twice in the book. (CM) In the previous chapter of the book, Scout felt like she was an outcast because Jem refused to answer her question, “How do you know?,” by saying, “Oh go on and leave me alone,” because he was idle and also irritable over time. (CM) Likewise, Dill ran to the Finches because he felt forsaken from his parents; he thought his parents did not love him because they did not spend some time with Dill. (SD) Furthermore, Boo Radley is one of the extremely important characters who was broached numerous times (CM) For instance, Boo was mentioned mysteriously when Jem and Scout distressed him in the very previous chapters. (CM) Boo Radley comes out once again in Chapter 29 and he rescues Jem from Bob Ewell in a compromising situation. (SD) In addition, racism is a theme that is repetitious in this story. (CM) For example, Aunt Alexandra tells Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia from his house because Calpurnia’s skin color is black. (CM) Tom Robinson is arrested and goes to jail; he is discriminated by the judge and other white people because his skin color is black. (CS) Thus, there are diverse themes and significant characters that have repetition in the story, so they engross the readers.

Mr. Williams drove Daniel and me to Claude Chester School. When we arrived at the school, I heard the hyper and loud yelling and screaming of the students from the gym. They had pizza party because they behaved well on previous days. When Jeremy clapped, the children clapped after him and became quite. I put on a latex glove and started to get ready before they were lined up. I ripped off the paper towel and gave each of them a piece of the paper towel. What I have noticed was that they were very quite that I did not hear any noise except footsteps and saying “thank you.” They received the paper towel, washed their hands with a hand sanitizer, and received a piece of either pepperoni pizza or cheese pizza. After we gave the pieces of pizza to all the children, Jeremy asked us to have a piece of pizza. The children sat on the center line of the gym after they finished their pizza. Since it was Friday, they watched a movie called Despicable Me because they did not have any homework. Thus, we went into a classroom to watch the movie. Some students did not even watch the movie, but played with their Teck Decks, a small toy skateboard that we may play with our fingers. Furthermore, Adrian, my best friend at Claude Chester School, was drawing a picture. While I was forgetting about the time, Mrs. Rosenberg sent a message that she was there. I went out of the classroom imperceptibly and left Claude Chester School.

Likewise, there was no difference of children at Claude Chester School. I could hear the sound of the children outside of the school, and they were also hyper as the last visit. They played “gambling”, as they call, with their jellies again. One boy came to me said, “Oh, you are the neat boy!” I did not understand so I asked, “Why am I a neat boy?” The boy said, “Because you told us not to say bad words last time!” Adrian seemed different then last visit; he was also playing “gambling” with his friends. All of the children looked satisfied. However, it was a busy day for the students. They had homework because it was Monday. Thus, I asked Adrian, my best friend at Claude Chester School, which homework I could help him. He wanted me to help him with his English homework, which was to read an article about Civil Rights and write a summary of the article. Hence, I asked him what the article was about after he read the article. He wrote words so slowly and I had to leave. It was a busy day for me because I had more works than the last visit.

Assessment Visit 1

Assessment visit 1
01/14/2011

(TS) On 14th of January, I made my first visit to Claude Chester School. (SD) Since it was my first time meeting with students of Claude Chester School, I could not imagine how they would behave when they meet me and what I would do at the school. (CM) When I finally arrived at school, I heard loud noises from the gym where I would work for the school’s children. (CM) I saw two men and two women, who were from Boys and Girls Club, and I talked to a man who seemed like having most power; he introduced me to the children and I started my job. (SD) There was not much of work because it was Friday, the only day the students do not get any homework; they ate pizza, watched a movie, and had free time. (CM) I talked to a boy whose name is Adrian, a boy who has a face with full of curiosity, and who did not believe my name is Inpyo Hong. (CM) He gave me a piece of red jelly that had a smile on it to make me sit down when he had to sit down and listen to the man who was from Boys and Girls Club; he said “you sit down, I sit down.” (SD) I was so glad that I met Adrian because it seemed like nobody talks to him because he did some disgusting acts such as showing what is in his mouth while he is eating. (CM) Thus, I kept stopping his abnormal acts and being next to him because I did not want him to feel abandoned. (CM) Furthermore, I am very satisfied that I met Adrian and knew about him because I now have a friend that I can help seriously. (CS) Hence, this visit to Claude Chester School with Daniel D’Amato was such an exciting trip, which made me expect for next visit to the school.

Essay 9

Unnoticed Hero:
An Essay on Quite Heroes
An Essay by Inpyo Hong

January 24, 2011

(Hook) Jean Jacques Rousseau alluded, “Heroes are not known by the loftiness of their carriage; the greatest braggarts are generally the merest cowards.” (CM) This quote depicts that a hero does not pretend to be a hero, but helps people quietly. (CM) In To Kill A Mockingbird, Miss Maudie alleviated severe situation without any attention. (Thesis) One can be a hero even though the one is not conspicuous.
(TS) An unobserved heroine, Miss Maudie, unnoticeably leads main characters, Scout and Aunt Alexandra. (SD) Miss Maudie gives a lesson to Aunt Alexandra while she is worrying about Atticus. (CM) Miss Maudie says that she and Aunt Alexandra are “paying the highest tribute they can pay a man” and they “trust Atticus to do right.” (CM) Additionally, Miss Maudie affronts people in Maycomb to demonstrate the people’s animosity at black people, and to advise and allay Aunt Alexandra. (SD) Furthermore, Miss Maudie makes Scout and Aunt Alexandra to be ready to go back to the ladies who are having a meeting. (CM) Miss Maudie alludes to Aunt Alexandra to get up by saying that they have “left the ladies long enough.” (CM) In addition, Miss Maudie asks if Scout are “together again”, if she are ready, just before they go back into the dining room. (SD) Finally, Miss Maudie leads Aunt Alexandra and Scout to go back to the ladies. (CM) Miss Maudie rigorously tells them to “join the ladies.” (CM) Moreover, she “opened the door to the dining room” to guide Aunt Alexandra and Scout to join the ladies. (CS) A quite hero is quite, attentive and unnoticed; Miss Maudie is the perfect lady who we may call the quite heroine.
(TS)Additionally, inconspicuous heroes such as my dad, mom, and Mr. and Mrs. Rosenburg, work vigorously to educate, support, and satisfy people. (SD) Unnoticeably, my dad always demonstrates how to work and live to be recognized in this society. (CM) My dad always strives at his works to provide good educations for my sisters and me. (CM) In addition, he educated us severely to be candid and patient all the time; and that is why I honestly esteem and love him. (SD) My mom, a thoughtful woman, is another unobtrusive hero in my life who always supports and educates me thoughtfully. (CM) She secretly supports me with her own money if I want to have more lessons such as SSAT vocabulary lessons, without dad’s agreement. (CM) She educated me to think wide by observing situations around me and this gave me the ability to find my defects and rectify them by myself. (SD) Mr. and Mrs. Rosenburg are my last heroes who accepted me to stay with them and their children, Austin and Andrew. (CM)Unremarkably, they try to satiate, and be very nice to me every time we encounter; they smile nicely when they are talking to me and helping me. (CM) Sometimes, they try to give me more advantages of choices than Austin and Andrew, and these facts prove why I want to be like them when I grow up. (CS) Therefore, inconspicuous heroes, my dad, mom, and Mr. and Mrs. Rosenburg, work very hard without letting people notice them.
(Hook) Consequently, one may be a hero without any notice from others. (CM) Miss Maudie is a heroine who is inconspicuous even though she helped the other main characters. (CM) Like Miss Maudie, my dad, mom, and Mr. and Mrs. Rosenburg quietly sacrifice themselves to help others. (CS) We must be unnoticed heroes who get more appreciation than revealed heroes.
